What Is IPL?
IPL stands for Indian Premier League. It is a professional Twenty20 cricket league operated under the authority of the BCCI. Unlike traditional international cricket, IPL teams represent franchises rather than countries.
Each franchise builds its squad using a combination of retained players, domestic talent, overseas players and players acquired through the auction process. This creates a unique competitive environment where experienced international stars can play alongside emerging Indian cricketers.
A standard T20 innings consists of a maximum of 20 overs. Because matches are shorter than Test and ODI cricket, teams have to make rapid decisions regarding batting order, bowling changes, field placements and player combinations.
History of IPL
The first IPL season was played in 2008. The introduction of the league created a new franchise-based model for professional cricket in India. Over the years, the competition expanded its audience and developed into a major international sporting event.
The league has also provided a platform for young Indian players. Many domestic cricketers have received opportunities to play with and against international stars, allowing them to gain experience under high-pressure conditions.
IPL's growth has also been influenced by broadcasting, digital streaming, sponsorship, stadium attendance and social-media engagement. The tournament has become an annual part of the cricket calendar.

IPL Tournament Format
The IPL format has evolved over the years. The league currently uses a league-stage and playoff structure. Teams compete for points during the league stage before the leading teams progress to the playoffs.
In the league stage, a team receives 2 points for a win. A no-result match generally gives each participating team one point, while a defeat gives zero points.
Net Run Rate, commonly called NRR, can become extremely important when teams finish level on points. The official playing conditions specify the procedures used for league-table ranking and tie-breaking.
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | 2 |
| No Result / Certain Tie Situations | 1 |
| Loss | 0 |
Important IPL Rules
1. Twenty Overs Per Innings
Each team normally has a maximum of 20 overs to score runs. The side scoring more runs generally wins the match.
2. Powerplay
The opening part of the innings has fielding restrictions. This creates opportunities for aggressive batting and early wickets.
3. Strategic Tactical Decisions
IPL teams use specialist batters, bowlers, all-rounders and wicketkeepers according to match conditions. Captains and coaches constantly assess pitch conditions, opposition players and required run rates.
4. Super Over
Certain tied matches can be decided using a Super Over according to the applicable playing conditions.
5. Points Table
Teams collect points throughout the league stage. Wins, no-results, net run rate and other applicable tie-breaking criteria can influence the final standings.
How Does the IPL Player Auction Work?
The IPL auction is one of the most closely followed parts of the tournament cycle. Franchises build their squads according to team needs, available purse, player roles and strategic plans.
Teams can acquire players through the auction while franchise regulations also provide mechanisms such as player retention and the Right to Match (RTM), depending on the applicable season regulations.
For the 2025–27 player-regulation cycle, the IPL Governing Council announced that franchises could retain a total of six players through retention and/or RTM, subject to the specified capped and uncapped-player limits.
The auction is strategically important because franchises must balance batting, bowling, all-rounders, wicketkeeping, overseas slots and squad depth.
IPL Playoffs Format
The IPL playoffs are designed to reward strong league-stage performance while still giving other qualifying teams a route to the final.
Qualifier 1
The top two teams from the league stage meet. The winner qualifies directly for the final.
Eliminator
The third and fourth-ranked teams compete, with the losing side eliminated from the tournament.
Qualifier 2
The loser of Qualifier 1 faces the winner of the Eliminator for the second place in the final.
Final
The two remaining teams compete for the IPL championship trophy.
Orange Cap and Purple Cap
Orange Cap
The Orange Cap is associated with the leading run-scorer of an IPL season. It is one of the most prestigious individual batting achievements in the tournament.
Purple Cap
The Purple Cap is awarded to the leading wicket-taker during an IPL season. Fast bowlers, swing bowlers, spinners and death-over specialists all compete for this award.
The official IPL website publishes season statistics and individual performance data, including batting and bowling leaders.
